Has anyone seen any design/plan for a contemporary wall unit constructed mainly of wood, rather than the way they are, normally, made with individual steel poles, as the supports. These are of open design, but with some drawers & doors. The ones I’ve seen are Italian.
Thanks,
Morty

Hi all,
MORTY HAS A GOOD POINT!!! I would like to see Fine Woodworking or Fine Homebuilding provide a section dedicated to wall units TOO. I would love for them to include some true to life situations for existing obstacles. For instance... I would appreciate some ideas to cover my existing brick without removing the brick. I need to build some shelves also and would like to incorporate a flat-screen tv over the fireplace with combination cabinets, drawers and shelves on both sides.
Thanks for some design ideas. It is much appreciated.

Morty: Google Poul Cadovius. Most of the ones from the sixties were extensions of his design for Royal Systems in the fifties.
He did some great designs. My favorite is the first series with the metal supports for the shelves. But, the later ones with the slanted dowels are also nice looking.
I'm thinking of making up a set for my place, but designed to match American framing standards, so the shelf standards can be screwed into the wall studs for support.
The signature systems designed by him were on a 31.5-inch , (800-mm) standard spacing which makes them a bit of a pain to mount up.
The high line version was in made in rosewood veneer, with veneer panels that went between the standards to make the whole wall wood. Not quite todays design esthetic, but they sure look great to me.
There was a set up in the later, tilted dowel series, that did away with the standards, and used sheets of 3/4-nch plywood with rosewood veneer, where the holes were drilled into the panels, and eliminated the standards.
