Went looking for hand planes. Found a few to restore. A Miller Falls? Mohawk-Shelburne #700 Block plane cost me a whopping one dollar. Total Rust Bucket. Got it restored, even found a front knob for it.
Next stop, a little Antique Store. While the planes in the store proper were a might pricey ($45 for a no-name #5) they have the “barn” beside the store. In it. I found two planes. on the first trip to this store, bought a small rusty, barely there plane for $5. took it home and remove half it’s weight in rust & crud. After a good cleaning up, and a tote repair, I now have a Union smoother in the stanley #3c size.
The other plane at that store? well, for $10 i could get a #5 sized rusty plane. It even had thre roofing nails under the frog. A stamped steel frog at that. Iron was stamped “Worth” so someone made this for the Worth Company. About WWII vintage. Still had a very good iron in it, no cracks in the base, or the handles. 13-1/2″ long. iron was even cambered nicely.
So, for about $16, I wound up with three “user’ planes. I’ll try to post some before & after shots of the three amigos..
