Hi again guys, I’m getting a handle on the shop sub-floor in my garage, but I’m getting conficting ideas about the position of the vapor barrier. I’m going to use 6mil poly as the barrier, yet I’ve seen it either in direct contact with the concrete, or over the sleepers and insulation. Hmmm… what does thou thinkith o wise ones?
Thanks,
-Marc

Vapor barrier always goes against the heated space.

FWW has a very good article about installing just such a floor in issue # 160 (I'm pretty sure that is the issue number). I can't remember now why, but the author shows the vapor barrier being installed both ways (next to the cement floor or over the insulation) depending on whether the floor is "permanent' or not.
I think the article will prove very helpful.
Good luck.
someone over at breaktime was talking about this: It might be worth looking into.

If your concrete is already poured and they didnt install a VB under the concrete youll need to place the VB against the concrete. Meaning w/o a VB under your concrete moisture will always be wicking up and releasing vapor. If your insulation is between the concrete and VB all you be doing is hosting prime conditions for rot and mold in the moist pockets created by the wood and insulation.
take a two foot by two foot clear plasic sheathing and tape it down on the concrete. Make sure its taped up on all four sides air tight. let sit for a few days to see if any condensation shows up under the plastic.... thats your indication what will hapen and where you should put your barrier.
If you have a VB under the concrete against the compaction material, and the concrete is over 3 months old then you can probably get away with no VB on your floor structure. No matter what try the plastic sheating test to see whats going on.

Thanks for the advice, I'll do that test tonight.

Hi,
Many thanks for that link! That made up my mind about how to do my garage floor when I start converting it to a shop next month.
I was think about the sleeper, insulation, VB route but the Delta-FL looks much easier to install and based on the prices I just got about 20% less expensive.
