I’m interested in making a Morris-style couch. I will probably just expand a Morris chair plan I have, but I’m wondering if anyone who might have done this project has any words of wisdom before I start in. Also, did you make your own (or have your own made) cushions? Thanks – Kris

These things get big. Make sure it'll fit through the doors after it's done. Mine almost didn't and almost made me look really stupid!
I had the cushions made by an upholstery shop. They turned out way nicer than they would have if I'd done 'em and an industrial sewing machine was NOT high on my list of new tools to buy. I wanted to go with leather (and still may some day), but that was thousands of dollars more than nice fabric.
When making the spindles, I don't M&T each one separately. Rather, I plough a deep groove in the rails and make a "comb" to fit in the groove that receives the spindles (kind of like a big box joint) - a LOT faster (and neater) in my experience.
If you are planning on making the legs up by miter joining 4 pieces (to get nice grain on each side), be extremely meticulous about getting your stock perfectly straight before milling the edge joints, especially if you are using a lock miter bit. The slightest imperfection will result in open corners.
Have fun. It's a nice project.
