   dear mr. jennings,      i reread my message and apologize for the difficulty.  thank you for your input.   i'm attempting to build a new base for a small comercially bought workbench and the plan i'm using calls for 1/2" tenons in 3" wood.  this sounds too thin and doesn't follow anything i've read(ie the tenon should be1/3 the thickness of the stock or the tenon should be 1/2 the thickness of the stock).  i've bought a 1" mortise chisel  and will see how it turns out.  thanks.       pete

   Pete,

   When folks call me "Mr. Jennings" I seem to always look over my shoulder to see if my dad just walked in.....

   Any who, I've been having enough problems here with the "eye candy" since The Move; it is I who should apologize for my terseness. 

   That being said, I think that you are correct in proceeding in the manner in which you are.
