I really don’t know how upnorth appeared on my posting, but heres my inquiry. I recently purchased a shop fox mortising maching. I had one problem right off the bat and that was when I went to disengage the handle to raise the head of the machine I broke off the shoulder bolt because the clutch didn’t quite disengage. Anyone experience this problem and if so what was your solution? I also purchased a four piece mortise chisel set from the same company. I was very disappointed in the quality of the chisels. I tried to cut a mortise in a piece of red oak and nearly started a fire. What I would like to find is a piloted, tapered sharpener of good quality so that I can get these chisels ready to cut. I’ve already polished the sides and need to be able to finish the process. thanks in advance. kikbakbob

The sharpeners are available from Rockler, Woodcraft, etc. I haven't used it on mine yet, but since I think they ship these with minor sharpening, I'm gong to do all four of them. Also, hone the outside on a stone or fine sandpaper- they'll cut much better.
Re: the almost fire- did you set it up with the chisel right on the bit or did you leave some space? I'm pretty sure it's supposed to have some space to get the srill in first, then the chisel cuts the mortice square.
I would call about the initial defect and get a replacement. No telling if that's going to be the last problem, even though it's the same machine as everyone else's.
I've got the same mortiser, no problems with the lever arm yet (knock on wood).
As for the chisels I bought the sharpening cones from Lee Valley and it made a big difference. Also, as the first poster suggested, just lapping the outside of the chisels lightly helps too.
I have the Lee Valley set also and it works well. Sharp chisels make a huge difference when it comes to mortise machines.
