what is the best mortiser in the $300.00 range? any opinions would be helpful. i live in southern idaho so i will probably need to buy without the option to try it out or see it up close. i mail order only on most my buys. thanks.

idman,
Check out the General, I don't have it but I hear it's real nice.

You can't try this router option out but you can study it.
the 2006 tool review had the general and delta (theres 2 deltas, but the good one has a chunkier base) as their top picks. the general is $399 with more options, the delta is $250, they both are 1/2hp.
i asked the same question a while ago, look for the post. some of the guys suggested and i've been doing mortises with my router. for moneys sake.
good luck to you
btw, i think that post was over in breaktime.

I have the "chunkier" delta which I like very much. Although I'm hardly a mortise expert nor do I run the thing 12 hours a day, I can't imagine there is a huge reason to spend more for a benchtop mortiser. I suppose its a different story if you are looking at the freestanding versions (i.e. the Powermatic). At any rate, no regrets on my part with the Delta.
