Can anyone talk me out of buying a mortising kit for my drill press as opposed to a dedicated mortising machine? The difference is $100 or so.

You will regret it! Get a slot mortiser and forget the chisel mortiser. Folks have having good luck with the Grizzly G0540 even though it's sold as a horizontal drill. Have used every type of mortiser from chisel, chainsaw and Maka and the horizontal slot mortiser is by far the best way to go!!!!!!
Get a slot mortiser, you will not regret it.
The mortising kit for the drill press is only good if you make occasional mortises. They can be a real pain to set up and repeatability becomes an issue. If you make a lot of mortises, look elsewehre.
I agree, get the Grizz. The dedicated motiser is okay, the attachment is very limited due to the lack of leverage on a dp handel.
