Good morning all,
I have just completed a blanket chest out of cherry and am in the process of adding the hardware.
My problem is that I can’t work out an accurate way to mark out the mortise for the lock striker plate. I have mortised the lock into the carcass and now need to do the same to the striker plate in the lid. I have tried to apply pressure on the lid, after locating the plate in the lock, but this doesn’t leave any impression. Anyone know a reliable way of doing this?
Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks,Briggo.

Try carbon paper.
If I understand correctly, you might consider applying some masking tape to the surface and then coat the latch with lipstick which would leave an imprint of exactly where the latch needs to be located.
Ben, Goldhiller,
Many thanks for your replies. I will try both methods and see which works best for me.
All the best, Briggo
If the screws, or screw holes line up the same on the lock and striker plates, you might try inserting a screw with no head but long enough and sharpened on the end into the lock side of the mechanism. You could put it in snugly with a pair of vice grips or pliers, carefully. Then, as long as it is perpendicular to all sides, and not loo long it will mark exactly where the screw holes on the striker plate will line up. Then just figure out where the mortise goes from there. You might even try putting a small finish nail in the screw hole and snip of the top to leave a sharp nib, enough to yank out with pliers though.
Good afternoon Mark,
Thanks for the advise. I'm not sure if the screws do line up, but I will check and if so give it a try.
Thanks again,
Regards, Briggo.
