Motor Capacitor for Bandsaw — Where to Find?
My bandsaw won’t run. The motor capacitor fried on my 14″ Craftsman bandsaw (Model #22401) and I’m not sure where to find one. Yes, I’ve tried Sears. They only sell the capacitor as part of the motor assembly. It would cost me about $200 for a $5 part. Since the bandsaw will be needed for my present project I will have to get it repaired. Do you have an idea where to find the capacitor?
Yes, I realize that I should have bought a Grizzly, Powermatic, Delta or some other brand. I know some offer the capacitor separate from the motor. This problem has given me a good idea. Whenever I’m considering a large machine purchase I’ll check the parts list to see if this kind of problem can happen. It might be a good idea to add a category to FWW reviews addressing this kind of issue (parts availability). I purchased the bandsaw partly due to positive reviews in several woodworking publications.
Other than the capacitor going out it’s been a very important tool in my shop and has performed very well.

Motor repair
Try a local Grainger outlet or local motor repair shop. It shouldn't be a big deal to replace a starting capacitor and it would be a good thing to know why such a simple device failed.

Buy Local
As Regis already suggested, capacitors are a standardized item, a local motor shop or Industrial supply house should be able to help you out.
Thanks for the suggestions. It would be great if it was that easy to find a capacitor that would fit the Craftsman bandsaw. I have tried numerous sources and no one seems to have any that will fit. It's been a very frustrating search. My best choice is to buy one with the right specs and construct a housing with PVC pipe parts to attach to the box on the bandsaw motor where the original capacitor was.
Specs?
What are the physical dimensions and electrical specs on the burned out capacitor, I can search through my sources. Another place to try is Grizzly, they have a large motor repair shop. Is the motor an Asian made one?
John, thanks for the offer. I was able to finally find one thanks to great customer service by John Buchanan at Eurton Electric Co. Inc. BTW -- The Customer Service reps at Grizzly did search for me, but didn't have what I needed. I was amazed that their Customer service was so much better than what I got from Sears.
