Motor Question on New Grizzly Jointer
I wanted to check that you would agree with this – just got my new 8 inch jointer and when I turn the jointer on there is a “screetch” sound but then goes away. Called Grizzly and the tech said it’s the centrifugal switch and is normal. Building furniture is my zone, not motors so I just wanted to check with you guys to be sure I was getting a straight answer. Thanks.

Could it be a loose drive belt?
I am a wood guy and not motor guy as well - I have a one year old Grizzly 8" 3hp jointer - starts and runs very smoothly with no squeaks/squeals.
I have the 8 inch Craftex jointer, a Grizzly clone and disliked the belt that came with it , changed to a link belt and both noise and vibrations were gone.
However, the noise could be coming from a different source, namely the cooling fan, my planer had a plastic fan that would loosen and make an awfull noise as well as not cooling the motor.
My 8" grizzly jointer does the exact same thing on startup. I chalked it up to a slightly loose belt but haven't bothered to try tightening it.
