Hi Everyone,
Happy Holidays to all. We are going to mount colonial picture frame molding to a plaster wall. I am not sure what is behind the plaster but I am pretty sure it is not plywood. In any case the picture frame molding is 3/4 inch wide. The moldimg is only 3/8 inches thick at the thickest bead, then is shaped down from there. One frame once installed is 10″ wide by 20 inches long. There are 20 of these frames that go under a chair rail down a hallway. Ten of the frames will go on one side and ten will go on the other side. I have brad nailer and can choose a brad from 5/8″, 1″, 1 1/2, 1 3/4, 2″. I am planning on choosing a brad maybe the one inch and putting some kind of adhesive on the back side there fore the brad would really become my clamp. I am not sure what kind of adhesive. Hot Glue” Titebond. I know if someone in a hundred years were to take this off it may tear the plaster. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations for this procedure. The brads may split the framing and the entire frame should be glued to the plaster walls. I dont know. What are your thoughts or anyone for that matter? Thanks Dan

Hi Dan,
This is not my area of expertise - I not sure what kind of glue would work best in this situation.
You might try using a micro pinner ( 23 gauge brad nailer) to attach the frames to the wall (if you have access to one). The smaller gauge would lessen any chance of splitting the frame but I am not sure how much holding power the small brads would have in plaster.
I would suggest posting to "Assign an Expert for me". I'm sure someone has more knowledge of this than I do.
Sorry I could not be of more help.

This is my first time to ask a question and I was advised to forward. I edited my question to All and dated the bottom of it, but I did not see a send button. So I have punched in the All button on reply and hope this is mailed to someone who may have some expertise on the question. Or to someone who knows how I can get this sent to any expert for advice. thanks Dan
Hummers,
I'm having touble understanding the intent of this project. Is it that you are you trying to hang picture frames on a plaster wall? If that's the case I think you need to consider a completely different approach. I can't imagine that you would want to nail them or adhere them to the wall.
I used to work in a shop that also had a gallery and the way we approached this was to attach a molding to the top of the wall and then screwed in small hooks along its length. Using clear fishing line, we hung framed objects from the hooks. This might not be what you ultimately choose to do but it illustrates that you might want to think outside the box here. Perhaps your chair rail could serve as a mounting aid.
Write back with your comments and I'll see what else we can come up with.

Matt,
Thank you for your response, I was able to get this colonial molding that goes under a chair rail in a square or picture frame technique with a 18 ga. paslode gun. It is very delicate molding but it did not split. I did put a little glue behind it to help hold the molding while manipulating the four pieces. thanks to everyone who had input.
Dan
