Hey Team,
I have a mountain ash burl i need to make into a sign for my sister in laws wedding. I have sanded it with 60grit sandpaper. I plan to sand it all the way to 240 grit, until its very smooth. Couple of questions;
1: it looks to be green timber, ie. its still “damp” and there are a couple of sap spots seeping. Will i need to treat it differently as to a air died/kiln dried timber?
2: Should i paint it after the sanding?
3: What should i finish the timber in? i want to showcase the amazing picture of life creating art, but not sure if a certain stain or gloss or resin will be best.
I’ll attach photos to help anyone with some pointers for me.
Thanks, Tim

It will need to dry before you do what you intend to do with it.
I hope the wedding isnt too soon. Burls can be tricky to dry and often check and crack. Some expert here will weigh in much better then me but do not buy any pricey supplies until you find out if it can be done in the time you have.
I agree with the above. If you finish it now it will absolutely crack as it is drying. I would find another piece of dry wood.
