I HAVE BEEN ASKED TO HELP A YOUNG MAN MOUNT A MANTLE ON A ROUGH FIELD STONE FIREPLACE WITH NO OBVIOUS MOUNTING BRACKETS OR SLOTS. I HAD THOUGHT ABOUT A CANTILEVER HOLLOW 8 IN SHELF WITH ONE EDGE LAG BOLTED IN THE MORTAR BETWEEN THE ROCK. I WOULD THEN PUT TWO BRACKETS UNDER THAT WILL REST ON THE STONE AND KEEP THE SHELF FROM TIPPING. ANY ONE GOT A BETTER IDEA? MERT

To attach the three 1 3/4-in-thick, DFir shelves to the stone veneered wall in the attached photo, I epoxied 3/4-inch threaded rod into pre-bored holes in each of the studs before the stone was laid. I then laid the shelves atop the rod, marked the shelf edge of for the rod, bored the 8-in-deep holes (slightly oversize), and epoxied the shelves to the rod. The slipery W.E.S.T. epoxy actually made it easier to pound the shelves home. As it turned out, the friction alone was enough to hold the shelves to the wall, and there was no noticeable flex with the heaviest expected load.
I think you could do the same with you hollow shelf so long as you have solid blocking wherever you intend to have rod.
Namaste,
Gary
