Mounting a power feed for shaper
The previous owner of my tool used metric 6-30 hex bolts to mount the base suport for the power feed but the holes thru the base support are 5/16″ holes. Can one takes these 4 holes and make them larger to accept a heavier bolt, say 5/16″? And which bolt type is stronger/better – finer threads or something like the 5/16″ x18? Bolts holes are in a cast iron surface about .35″ thick.

If the hole pattern is the same stay with the same metric bolts. If you have a bad hole with the threads all buggered up then you may need to eather through bold it with a bolt and lock nut of have a brass inset brazed in and re drill and tap the hole.
Depending on the size of the existing hole if there is meat left on the table to re tap to SAE threads use fine threads, do not try and tap corse threads.
