hi everyone,
I just finished my first big project, a kitchen island/cabinet with an open front for a microwave with a drawer underneath. I built the drawer and installed it but cannot get the slides to extend fully in synch with each other. In other words when one side is fully extended the other still has a 1/4 inch to go to full extension and it is sloppy. However, it actually closes pretty well.
I am not sure if my problem is my drawer isn’t square, or the drawer is too small?
I determined the width of the drawer by mounting the slides and measuring the opening between them. I think I did make is a little too small because it isn’t easy to get into the cabinet members.
The opening between the face frame is 37 inches and the drawer is 35 3/4.
What does it sound like is my problem?
Thanks
Greg

Side mounted drawer slides are 1/2" they require a little extra, between 1/32" and 1/16" per side. With an opening of 37" your drawer should measure 35 7/8" to 35 15/16". You are a little too small. You can place some thin cardboard under the slides to furr them out, matchbook cover size. Sometimes, the three slide components don't connect properly. When you open the drawer, if one slide part is lagging, just grab it and pull it ahead briskly, you should hear it click into it's proper place.
thanks Hammer 1.
I read about shimming the slides after I got frustrated and took the whole thing apart, and returned the slides to home depot, lol.
I wonder if the "pulling" into place trick would have worked. . .it was very hard to push the drawer in fully but maybe the mechanisms just weren't engaging.
Is it usually necessary to adjust the positions of the slides, up and down or back and forth. . or should they always be in the same position on each side of the drawer?
Greg
Difficulty in closing and opening the drawer can be related to the middle, moving part, of a full extension slide not being completely engaged. It can also be other things, like the drawer being to wide or narrow and putting pressure on the slides in either direction. Generally, the part that attaches to the faceframe is held back from the face about 1/16". The part that attaches to the drawer butts tight against the drawer front. The slides have elongated holes to allow adjustability both back and forth and up and down. If the drawer doesn't line up with the face, you make the neccesary adjustment. When first mounting the slides, you only put one screw in the elongated hole in the front and in the back. Make any adjustments and then put screws in the round holes to keep that adjustment.
thanks again, i am going to attempt again this weekend and do a dry run outside of the cabinet to test it.
