In reading the recent discussion on buying a new jointer, I have found out about the great deal on 8 in. jointers with Sunhill. However, they also have a sweat little 6 that has bolt on bed extensions to 52 in. in bed length and 2 amps more power in the motor than the Griz 6 in. jointer. Either Sunhill looks great because I’m not worried about 220 V. The problem is moving the 500 pound jointer, which I know I will do a lot, esp. as a renter, which is necessary because of the type of career I have. So how do you guys manage such odd-shaped objects weighing 500 lbs.?
Overhead automotive pulleys with chains?
Partial disassembly?
I’m about 5’10” and 185–the average man, and the 6 in. would not be a problem for me to just walk over to it and pick it up.

Rent a crane or a fork lift..LOL Only kidding , you need to put a mobile base on that jointer, then you can wheelthat puppy around your shop..

If you're really serious about buying something to pick the thing up with, check out some of the engine hoists available at automotive stores like Shucks, etc. I built a hoist for my driveway/shop using a 14' steel beam, beam trolley and 3 ton chain hoist which may be a little further than you want to go. Non the less, at my age, I find having various jacks, hoists and even the occasional forklift to move *big* stuff around is worth having and storing.
