Friends,
We are moving in about two weeks. The new house has a 30×40 basement. About 1000 ft sq are shop. The walls are poured concrete and have been painted off white. The floor will be sealed before moving in.The electrician is wiring the basement this week. I have about 6 ,8 foot flourescents. I made some lumber racks. The dehumidifier takes about two gallons of water a day out of the air.
I have a cabinet saw, band saw, drill press, RAS, jointer planer and a bench and lathe, misc hand tools.
Other than taking all the blades off, is there anything else I need to do before moving date. I was going to have the movers do it as I probably would not look good in a truss.

Frank,
I don't think it would be a bad idea to return the stationary machinery to the condition in which it was shipped: remove extension tables, fences and handles, secure motors, oil the tops, perhaps even secure each to a pallet.
You may even want to take some photographs in case you have any damage claims. (Might not be a bad idea to do with the furniture as well.)

P.S. One thousand square feet... how I envy you!
Frank... the first thing that comes to mind is to remove the table saw blade, blade guard and fence and pack them carefully and seperately. Clean out any sawdust and wax the table top. For the other 'stuff', again, remove blades, wax and SECURE any part that tends to move (jump at you) easily. Remember, if it sticks out, movers don't like it. They like nice square things that can be stacked easily and tightly. You may even want to remove the two handles on the TS. Best of luck with the move and with setting up your NEW shop. I'm jealous. It would take a stick or two of dynamite to clean out my shop enough to get it set up properly!

Frank,
The best advice I could give you've already done. Get someone else to move the equipment! Although I won't have the power for another 2 weeks, I've finished my move today. I feel like a truck has run over me and I have a new found respect for the guys and gals that do everything with hand tools!

I agree with Jeff K on the T/S extentions. Most of those guys are gorillas and you know they're going to pick that saw up by the extention wings. Cotton tarp at HD is cheap. You might consider covering and wrapping duct tape around anything that moves as another poster stated.
Good luck with the move. I envy your new basement as I have one with the poured concrete. You'll like it. I wouldn't envy the move though. It's a pain as Don stated. Those moving guys are going to love you with all those heavy tools. That's why I would batten down the hatches, they are not going to be happy campers.. ha..
Good Luck..

Folks,
Some great suggestions. I hadn't thought about the extension arms. I bet everything is going to require a thorough adjustment after it is moved.
thanks
Frank
Frank, I would even consider removing the TS table from the cabinet and pack each separately in a wood crate. It will need to be aligned at the other end, anyway.
we moved about six months ago- PACK EVERYTHING AS IF YOUR WORST ENEMY IS GOING TO MOVE IT! the movers do not give a damn about your stuff and do not understand your attachment to your tools. good luck.
and buy ALOT (at least 4 or 5 rolls) of the 3" wide stretch film- like pallet wrap but not as wide or heavy- it is worth its weight in gold!
