What little tricks have you learned working in your shop? I’ll start off:
- I save my used disposable earplugs that’re all covered with wax and crud. When I have enough, I put them in a woman’s lingerie bag and run them through the washing machine. They come out almost new, and I don’t have to pay $50 for a box of 200 pairs.
- When I need buckets for painting or varnishing, I wander down the street on recycling day and collect all the coffee cans I find. Not only are they good for finishes, but if I cut a slit in the plastic top, it’ll hold the brush upright in solvent between coats.
- For a minor cut, I pat a pinch of sawdust onto it to stop the bleeding before I get blood all over my project. It’s faster and more convenient than traipsing through the house for a bandaid.
- When I get glue or oil on my hands, I rub them with sawdust. It seems to work faster and better than using soap and water.

I no longer wear gloves when staining, I just use the new orange hand cleaner and take it ALL off!
I've discovered with a bit of duct tape here and there i can work in the nude and save a lot of trips to the laundermat.
ROFLMAO
I just want to know one thing. Doesnt the eventual removal of the tape sorta hurt a LOT???
on second thought, I dont think I want to know, my brain is sta-sta-sta- stalling already.

maybe she's talking about duct tape over the windows? Splinter - are there any openings there for an apprentice? (read that however you wish)

I leave openings through which one may drive trucks, but it's not a job for amateurs.
Duct tape removal is easily accomplished with a generous application of hot oil. It is advisable but not absolutely necessary that this be food-quality oil.
I suppose you know the one about using 1/4" perforated hardboard as drill press templates for boring shelf holes in cabinet sides? I ripped several 1" x 8' strips to do this in my advanced woodworking class and I thought the class was going to flip. Even the instructor thought it was innovative.
I used painter's blue tape to attach the strips, then ran the assemply along the drill press fence. I set the bit about 1/8" above the work so I can visually align each hole before boring. I do an 8' line of hole in about 12 minutes, but I'm very slow.
Splinter, will you STOP IT!
First you start on with naked and duct tape. I'm thinking, Oooook, this could be fun. then I gets thoughts on removing the tape. <shudder>. spent 2 days wiping tears out of my eyes every time I thought about it.
NOW, you start on with the hot oil. geez, talk about knowing how to tease a fella.........
