Hey,
Got something other then politics. I am bidding a Murphy Bed with all the fixings on the sides. Cabinets, wardrobe, and selves etc…configuration yet to be determined.
I have searched to web and like(?) the look of the piston type counter balance hardware. Everything looks straight forward which worries me…
My question is are they easy or am I venturing into the world of never ending adjustments? If you’ve actually build one from scratch let me know what’s in store.
Thanx

I built a Murphy bed for my son while he was away in Iraq. I followed the directions that came with the piston version and am very pleased with how it turned out. I have built other sophisticated furniture in the past and found that this project while time consuming turned out to be a successful task and I did not require meticulous woodworking. Just follow the plans and drill the holes as they are layed out. It helped me to have an area to lay the pieces out as I constructed the project.

Dave thanx for the reply...was the piston arm system fussy to work with and adjust?....it sounds like you build the box frame to specs, put a piston on each side via a bracket, and screw it to the wall?
For the sake of the bid, was most of your time spent making the bed frame and shelves or laying to the directions? Sorry, to bug you so much but I need to visualize this thing to get it right.
Say thank you to your son for me...he is/was part of a mission few understand.
Thanx for your time

I spent alot of time going over the plans, then I highlighted each piece on the plan as I finished it. Assembly went smoothly as I layed each piece out according to the construction picture. I just measured 4 times for the holes that had to be drilled then drilled. Every thing fit perfectly.
I suggest you read the plan and Highlight the important points at each step first. After that is complete you will feel very confident about how the parts wi go together.

Hey Coach B.
I made a murphy bed with the piston-style hardware about four years ago and we have folded it up and down every day since. The instructions that come with the hardware make the job pretty fool proof. It includes a template for drilling the mounting screw holes for the hardware. If you use the template accurately, there is no need for any final adjustments.
Most of your labor is going to involve building the cabinetry and bed platform. If you build the entire unit in your shop it should take only a few hours to install.
