I built a murphy bed unit from plywood, with a pine face (visible when bed is closed) using hardware and plans from Rockler.com. It's held up great after two years of steady use. You can find two products at Rockler.com by searching for "murphy bed" in the search bar; I used the less elaborate plans of the two they sell.
good luck with it.

After seeing the response recommending I take another look at Rockler, I think I now have the plans and hardware selected. If I'm not reading the Rockler page wrong, I can order the verticle double hardware (89624) the single bookcase plan (31942) to make two bookcases, two of the bookcase lighting kits (31953) and the bed lighting kit (31965). That takes care of the plans and hardware.
Now I need to find a source for cabinet or molding grade pine somewhere here in Arizona (if the plans allow use of that stock). Any suggestions?
Thanks
