The only way I can tie this topic to woodworking is that I like music while I work in my shop– so please help me. I have recently subscribed to Bearshare on the net, you can download music for free,I don’t know if it is legal- if not I’ll cut my losses and drop it. Any opinions or wisdom would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Marvin

I have used it and got some nasty virus. I stopped using them and have not gone with a new service. As for how legal it is......I am glad I stopped.....I am looking at Itunes. I would rather pay and be legally safe than get dinged later.
Thank you,
Cheatah
Thanks Cheatah, I too feel uneasy about its use it does leave one open to all sorts of nasty computer ailments, and just does not "feel" legal. I believe I'll trash it.
If your computer is in your shop, and you aren't looking to download music for playback later, there are any number of internet radio stations you can listen to. Just do a google search on 'internet radio' and start looking around, there are all kinds of directories online. As long as you have Windows Media Player on your computer (assuming you have a PC) it's simple to do and is free, without any worries about pirating music.
Besides music, you can find news, talk, sports, whatever you want. Right after Hurricane Katrina, I was listening to a station out of New Orleans (and also watching webcasts from one of the local TV stations down there.) It was a much better way to find out what was really going on, instead of listening to the talking heads on the networks.
Thanks Stuart, I have a stereo in the shop, I'll just use the radio and cd's I have bought which is better than using the woodworking shop at a federally funded institution and being a late night date for some roomies that I might be required to spend say 2-5 years with.

I get XM radio with my tv package. I was thinking about wireing a couple speakers in my shop from the tv. speakers.
Have a nice day and happy holiday season. Lee
Hey Marvin,
I have an IPod which is super cool. Used in conjunction with ITunes, I have all the music I like in one neat little package. I take it everywhere. With accessories, you can play the thing off your shop stereo.
Did I mention how cool it is? I love gadgets........

I've loaded all my cds into my computer and burned mp3 discs with about 100 songs each. Just grab one at random and it's almost like running your own radio station.
But if you want the best radio, you can get XM receivers for around $30. The $12 per month subscription is the best money you'll spend for your shop. They just signed Bob Dylan as a dj. No foolin.

I'll second the XM advice; I've had it for about a year now and really love it. I've heard styles of music and songs that I never would have if I had to listen to my own CDs. Rick
On the internet, try http://www.live365.com
they have a seemingly endless selection of programming.
you can listen free, or pay $40 per year to have all the commercials and promos removed.

Alas, no internet connection in the shop. We have DSL in the house but the shop is in the barn a couple hundred feet away. BTW, my favorite on the wb is RadioMargaritaville. Wouldn't ya know that's now on SIRIUS! after I went with XM! Oh well...Rick
I thank you one and all for your responses. I now have several options other than bearshare.
Thank you , Marvin

i've had xm in the truck for a year or so, and i never listen to local radio anymore. i like non-nashville country/rock/texas roadhouse, so xm ends up on cross-country (channel 12) all the time. i bought xm for both my kids for christmas. xm tosses in internet access for free with a subscription.most of time at home and office, i listen to "greune with envy" a texas country music station on live365. commercial free is worth $4 per month.
I like "Gruene" ... You might want to check out "Biker Bar Radio" and "Masterpiece Net Blues" also on Live365.
Good listening! Almost as good as seeing the Cornell Hurd Band live at the Broken Spoke!

No, it's too far for our wireless router at least. Plus, I would need a computer in the shop as well. Rick

Go to the Cafe and look for my thread asking about music, people respnded pretty well there. And here are the WWA folks responses.

If your PC is in the shop, then you might want to check this web page:
http://www.pandora.com
Basically, you can configure internet radio stations that suits to your music taste and style, then Pandora will pick new songs following what you choose. Good part is it plays whole songs with no commercials, and it is free.
If you want to keep a copy of songs, there is another neat S/W, called Replay Music ...

Hi Marvin,
For the past 3 years I have used MusicMatch internet service in my shop. I pay about $4/month. It is like having a huge jukebox in your shop. Just type in the name of an artist or title or even a fragment of a title, and up pops a list of albums or tracks. It is an on-demand service, which means I listen to what I want, when I want. I have XM in my car, but the thing is, while they have many great specials and shows, I still find myself flipping around from channel to channel all the time to find what I'm in the mood for at that moment.
For example, I can sit down, type in an artist, up comes a list of albums, and I choose the album I want to play. Usually I choose half a dozen albums from several artists, then hit a button to mix them all together in random order. If I tire of something, I just walk over and type in the name of who I want to listen to next...and hit return.
The other thing I really like is a feature called artist match. If your really into a particular artist, let's say, Richard Thompson, you choose "Artist Match", and you get a mix of Richard Thompson, and other stuff you're likely to enjoy, because you like Richard Thompson! I have discovered alot of music I wouldn't have found otherwise this way.
The sound card in my computer is just plugged into an older stereo amplfier I have in the shop. I have also hooked up one of those little FM transmitters you can get for an iPod (about $30)...so I can broadcast tunes across the shop to my pelton Worktunes ear protection when I'm milling stock, etc.
There are other on-demand services available, but I was an early adopter of MusicMatch and have been quite happy with it. Another is "Rhapsody".
Hope this helps!
i own both sirius and xm satellite services. i have not listened to terrestrial radio in 3 yrs. in my opinion sirius is the best service. better reception due to one more sat than xm and the music is played by live djs and not preprogrammed music lists-happy shavings
I just have a bunch of old Robert Johnson and BB King CD'sWood dust does not seen to bother the audio!Yep I'm a white guy that just loves OLD Blues! AND I love ZZ-Tops AND Blondie!
