Good Morning Matt,
I am a 75 year old beginner. I am enrolled in cabinetmaking at Palomar College in
Southern California. I would like to find some plans for music stands.
Can you direct me to a source?
Thank you hjswilton2000.

Good day hjswilton2000,
Congratulations on your new-found interest. You've picked a great school to learn from. I've heard a lot about the program at Palomar College, and know they have a great facility and teaching staff.
I just looked through the Fine Woodworking archive and was unable to find a set of plans for a music stand. We do have several images of music stands in the gallery (click here to view). You might use the images for inspiration and work with one of your instructors to create your own design that incorporates basic joinery and techniques.
A lot of professional woodworkers use the music stand as a project to show off their woodworking skills and design abilities. You might want to follow suit and use this opportunity to practice the basics, such as making a set of plans, cutting basic joinery, turning on the lathe, ect...
Some things to consider:
- Music stands generally are adjustable in height, and stand between 38-in. to 48-in. tall so they can be used when sitting or standing.
- Often they incorporate a pedestal base, as described in this article on building a small table.
- The section that holds the music should tilt. This could be done with store-bought hardware, or with a shopmade hinge.
Hope that helps, Matt
Thank you Matt for your rapid, thoughtful response. I will discuss this with the instructor. I have copied many of your examplesand the stool for detachable legs.
