Went to an estate auction yesterday…100s of planes (at least 500 molding planes alone), tools, etc.
I went for the wood. The previous owner was a “collector” who never seemed to make anything.
I got:
- a dozen pieces of QS white oak in 6-10″ widths, all 12′ long
- about 60 bf clear, FAS pine in 12″ wide boards 8-12′ long
- Doug fir flooring, 6 pieces 12′ long
- 2 10″x12 foot slabs of recovered 12/4 oak beams, and a smaller 8′ piece
- couple of 5/4 rough sawn cherry, 12′ x 8-10″
- a whole bunch a lot of clear cedar T&G wainscoting (1/4″ thick)
- dozen 8′ 2x4s, 4 12′ 2x4s, all doug fir and of nicer quality than I’ve seen for years.
All for (drum roll) $50!
While picking up the wood today, the estate manager told me to help myself to the boxes of scraps and junk. Took some odds and ends for the kids tree house, then I found the big hunks of ebony and cocobolo, plus a nice 2″ turning blank of purpleheart. Couple huge pieces of clear and orange lexan (one 1/2″ thick). That and a new Wagner moisture meter.
Gotta run now and pick up a lottery ticket before my luck changes.

Aw come on now. Did they see your gun?
We expect to hear back with the lottery ticket results. Nice find!!
what are your numbers?
You are going to have a bad back before long, splinters from some of those species are known to cause problems and dust from the others has been known to shorten life expectancy. Still, enjoy whilst you can!

Sounds Like you did well. I spent all day yesterday moving the wood I got at a sale last week. I bought probably 200+ bdft of walnut for $90 and 100bdft of poplar for $35.
