Hi Folks,
I just thought that it might be fun to start a discussion about who’s you’re favorite woodshop pal might be.
It seems to me that we’re all in the shop, busily making the pieces that we’ve dreamed/planned during the quieter months when mother nature hasn’t exactly cooperated with our desires to be in the shop. At least that’s the case with me.
Chewie (AKA Chewbaca) is my woodshop buddy. He doesn’t like earmuffs when I use the power tools but smiles a lot when I’m working at the bench with handtools. The wife is a great designer as she has a lot more artistic talent than I.
Maybe a good team.. Can’t wait to retire!

I couldn't help but notice: you seem to have a dampness problem in your shop...Carolina Jack
Down here in the south it gets really humid this time of year, I may have to run the dehumidifier this week. (grin)RonIf you're too open minded your brains will fall out.
Caden the wonder dog. Brown and white Ausi and as we all know herding dogs are scary smart...smarter than me sometimes.
I obviously was doing something really boring in the shop the day this pic was taken, or it was the middle of the afternoon, a time in which Angel Belle just can't keep her eyes open.Ron BreseIf you're too open minded your brains will fall out.Edited 7/24/2007 7:53 am ET by Ronaway

How about Rose. She really gets excited when the plane starts working right. Loves the sound of a good cut.
Napa is my shop buddy. I don't have a pic of him in the shop, but here is one of him in the only other place he'd rather be.
"HRM 10-Pound", on patrol. He leads the flock under the vines that climb the shop. In warmer months, the shop door is open - so in come the birds. 6 hens and His Majesty, milling about in the shavings and dust. On comes the table saw and out they go...
Hey beach,
That looks like one surly rooster!
We had two that came in a dozen chicks from the local Blue Seal grain store. They were, as the long time friend proprieter told us, mistakes. The damn things would attack us when we went to collect the eggs! Mighty protective of their flock I suppose.
Allen, that is one fine bird ya got there. In my neck o' the woods she wouldn't make it, way too cold up here in NH. Have you got her trained to pick up your tools for ya when done for the day?
That is so warm having a parrot for a shop buddy! I would be interested in knowing how the name Rose came about.
Thanks ALL for the posts and keep 'em comng. I'm sure there are more. I'm wondering where the cantankerous cat from the shed dweller is?????
Hope all you folks are having a great summer.

Well Bob, since you ask. We got Rose when she was about 6 weeks old. Not a feather on her just a ball of down about the size of a cassette tape. The wife had to feed her every two hours or something like that for weeks. The name came from the Movie the Titanic. It had just come out and the kids picked up on the name. She has a red tail so it worked. She won't pick up anything that she plans on giving back to you to quick but she can talk you to death.
Later,
Hey Allen,
I get a kick from hearing stories about pets and some of the things they do. It must be a real hoot talking to he parrot, especially if someone else happens along.
Chewie won't climb the stairs to the woodshop when I'm runing power tools. I perhaps might get some earmuffs for him but I don't think he would like them. He bounds up the stairs when I'm up there and it's relatively quiet.
When hand planing at the bench he will pick up the shavings in his mouth and take them into a corner and make a bed to lay down on. It must be catching on as now and then the cat joins in the bedmaking festivities too.
If this keeps up I will have to sweep the floor less and less; just clean out the corners now and again.

Here's China Girl (China for short). She's a pretty good shop dog, but wouldn't mind if I just stop all that darn woodworking and play with her.
P.K. (Porch Kitty) is a stray that adopted me. He's a true shop cat. Doesn't mind the noise one bit and will jump in your lap even if seated at the drill press working on something.
Gidget is my PITA trouble-maker cat. Always into something she shouldn't be but they don't come with garantees so I'm stuck with her.
If you build it he will come.
Here's what's under my feet if I don't kick them out because I'm using tools that are too noisy!

You got Shelties!
The better half got one just a few months ago so now we have three. Chewie is a full grown, Jasmine is a short hair medium size and Spirit is a Sheltie. Waiting for a pic of all three.
Don't know about you but I really like the temperment of collies. forestgirl has a handsome collie but don't know if he frequents her woodshop.

Bob, I agree about the temperment I'm had shelties off and on since I was a boy and I love 'um! Unless, god forbid, I dust something off with compressed air. They go absolutely bonkers!
They also have great fur for this part of the world, I'm in NH, too! They spend much of the day outside in the winter and aren't bothered a bit.
Lance
Lance,
And it seems our backgrounds are similar but apparently at opposite ends of the state. Used to live in Hudson. We've had collies since '95 and with 5 acres and being in the country they are in heaven so to speak.
Chewie actually will talk to you, or it seems that way, much like Chewbaca (hence the name) did in Star Wars.

Hey Bob,
Unfortunately, I keep my four-legged babies out of the shop as every session almost always has power tool play. That racket is way too much for their sensitive ears.
My BC boy *hates* when I use a nail gun and I'm working on the house. Just simply hates it and goes completely bonkers.

Great thread, I'm glad you started it. I lost my dear woodshop buddy to cancer last Thanksgiving. Zeus was our beloved Golden Retriever, and he loved laying on the cool concrete floor on hot summer days. I think of him every time I go out to the shop. His "sister", Athena, is a Black Lab / Mastiff mix, but she's not much of a shop girl.
I had a black lab named Bill before I got Angel Belle, I lost him to spleen cancer and to say I was devastated would be an understatement, When you spend as much time in the shop alone as I do, a companion dog can be a real plus to your life. I got Angel Belle from a guy who had won her as a puppy in a Duck's Unlimited fund raising auction. When I got her she was 9 month's old, her ears had all kinds of brown stuff coming out of them and her hair was coming out in hand fulls, and she was raising a litter of puppies. The last two were to go to their new homes the next day, and she was hanging heavy with milk because they had studpidly not allowed her to wean them. After about two months and $500.00 in vet bills to get her in good health again, my supposed free lab began to blossom into the dog she was always meant to be. She's been a wonderful addition to our family and I do believe she is the most obedient dog I've ever had the pleasure of having about the house and shop.Ron BreseIf you're too open minded your brains will fall out.
Here is Maddie. She keeps me in line when in the shop. She to loves the cool concrete. Bogart
When I go to the woodshop he is right there behind me and goes to his favorite spot.

Thanks Everyone!
This discussion is getting better by the minute. Didn't realize how many dogs frequent the woodshops in here. I'm sure there are many more Woodshop buddies out there.
Never expected a parrott! That's way cool!

Here's a shot of Trooper. He's 10 now, and unfortunately forced to retire this year due to a torn ACL in his left rear knee. He was the best dang bird dog I've ever had the pleasure of hunting behind. Junior champ, flusher class, and a Master Hunter's Title to boot! Now, I just call him Termite. He loves to eat wood shavings in the shop. I've got to boot him out when I'm working with walnut.
Jeff
Hey Jeff,
Do you still take him out for the occasional pleasure hunt? From the look on his face he seems to miss the hunt.

Well, there isn't anything wrong with my dog a good taxidermist couldn't cure. I'd find one too except I really like that cat and she thinks the dogs are hers.
The only thing he hunts now is squirrels and chipmunks, chasing them up a tree or in a hole. He's a big dog, at 98 lbs, in perfect shape (except for the knee), and is so explosively strong that if I were to put him in the field on birds, he'd probably blow the knee out again, leaving him crippled for the rest of his life.
I prefer, as hard as it is to not hunt him, to have him around for as long as possible, and as healthy as possible. He will now spend the rest of his days sitting on the couch next to me watching the Cubs and the Bears. He's getting the hang of it. He started barking yesterday when Aramis Ramirez hit that 3 run shot in the 8th inning. LOL (Maybe that was because I was jumping up and down, screaming "Yahoooooo!"
I'm presently looking for his hunting replacement. I do feel sorry for the next dog. I'll love him, of course, but he'll never live up to the rediculously high standard set by Trooper!
Jeff
Hmm, my lab (black, big as a horse) has the same torn ACL.
It's a very common injury in large sporting dogs.
Jeff
A sad one at that. Used to be a massive "I can do anything" dog now he just mopes around and occasionaly takes a dip in the neighbors pond (lol).

My buddy is my six yr old black lab, Sierra. She loves to lay in the woodchips or at my feet on the rubber stall mats in front of the fan when I'm carving.
For you folks that showed pictures or talked about your 'yard birds', our neighborhood has a flock of turkeys that roam around foraging. They'll stop at our house to get a meal from the bird feeders.
If I new how to upload pictures on this thing I would share them with yas.
Chris.
No way these two galoots get to be in the shop when I'm working, there'd be no room for me!

forestgirl,
Is that some wood for a new spokeshave your galoots are making?

I give them any wood I need the bark taken off of, it gets taken care of pronto!
The Golden Retriever (Cody) has just gone off for a month of training for pheasant and duck hunting. Wow, do we miss him!! This picture shows how truly handsome and irresitable he is!

This is Bailey!
Here's some photos of our "kids". Zeus is the Golden Retriever who we lost to cancer, and Athena, a Black Lab and Mastiff mix. Zeus was my shop buddy, Athena loses interest pretty quick. There's a soft cushion waiting somewhere for her, so it's her mission to find the right one.

Finbar, a dog of rare talent, skill and class!
Hey, Finbar, hand me the wrench. No, not the pipe wrench, the box wrench, you dummy! Attaboy, good dog!!!
Ray
Hey! It's Finbar the boat building dog.! Good to see you around Finbar. (And Ed.)
Sometimes my shop buddy (Spencer) takes an active role in the work. Here he's starting a woodcut for me.
He is pictured here with his favorite tool, the japanese chisel.
His least favorite tool is the shopvac.
vincent,
Where's the beret?

There's a *huge* rat that's taken up residence in the shop lately.
My wife and 9 year old sone were in the shop lately by themselves, and she ssiad she's surprised "dad hadn't set the rat trap yet". My sone replied to here. "maybe Dad likes the company when he's out here by himself". :G:
The trap got set today. A rat is one thing, but rat poop has definitely got to go.
My two cats like to join in when I'm in the shop; sometimes even the noise doesn't scare them off. But their companionship is not always welcome, as they like getting very close, as this picture will show. Fuzzy, my grey, likes to hop up on the bench while I'm working and sit right where I'm working. He and his brother Baxter did this the other week when I was padding shellac on a cabinet top...not pretty, but I guess it's better than if I were painting.
In the pic, Fuzzy comments on some of the proportions for the cabinet (I was working on a full-scale drawing to tweak things).
Hi All,
This is my workshop helper. He is a Puli.
Much like a broom with legs.
he (Molson, named after the beer, he's from Canada),
stays outside when I'm doing the noisy stuff, and the first thing he does when
coming in is to see if I left any small cut offs by the miter saws.
Canoedog
Hi all,
Whoops, for got the pic.

Bob, here is Mr Wadkin. R. Dog. Legend in his own time. Bench dog of note. Vanquisher of wild pigs and sundry interlopers including wheel thieves. Non tolerator of cats unintroduced to his Lordship. Finest of guards. Fortunately for him and unfortunately for me he had to remain in Zimbabwe where he continues to acquit himself well under trying conditions.
Here are my 2 lunks. Oliver and Bailey. Shown perfecting the art of sleeping where they are already performing at the level of master.
This has been a great post. I enjoy dogs adn it's nice to see so many others do also.
