I found a 2×5 inch piece of a mysterious wood at the local recycle center today. What attracted me to it was the words stamped on it “THD & Co. (L) Honolulu”.
The wood was rough sawn. I paid the $1.50 asking price for the 6′ piece of it, took it home & ran it through the planer. Now I’m wondering what I got for my money!
It is medium weight, soft enough to barely scratch with my fingernail, very tight grain & smooth looking, with what appears to be a yellow heartwood & and a redder/orangish sapwood. It also has a quite pleasant smell, I get lemons mixed with hint sort of like cedar. (I’ll never get to write a wine column, how do they come up with those terms to describe the “bouquet”of a wine?)
So what do I have? Thanks. And yes I know about the Hoadley book, I will check it out at the library in the near future, but figured someone here would have a clue.

Jim,
I'm going to venture a guess and say that you might have a piece of sandalwood. There is an article about sandalwood in a long ago FWW.It doesn't describe the wood, only the wonderful aroma that's released when it's sawed. Sort of a combination lemon and cedar smell. If it's sandalwood, it's a protected wood in Hawaii, so enjoy it. I'll probably get beat over my head and shoulders from them more knowledgeable than me,but that's OK.I can stand rejection.
