   Colored wax fillers work well for small holes on finished wood.

   Jim,

     I use Blendfil sticks on wood that's already had the finish applied.  They're round, paper-wrapped, crayon-like sticks in various shades to match the finish. Availible in paint dept of most home supply stores.  When I have a bunch of holes to fill I chuck one in a cordless drill and spin it into the holes.  They leave an excess of filler around the hole which is buffed off with a paper towel.     GP

   Not using nails completely avoids this problem.

   If the wood is exposed to the eye, I usually put a dab of glue in the hole and put some of the dust (from the same wood) on top of the glue.  I rub the mix into the nail hole and immediately sand over the area.  Makes the nail hole practically disappear.

   I use some blendfil sticks that others use, flick your bic, just heat it a little.
