I need to fill nail holes in a room of trim. I have a few coats of shellac on the trim. Assuming I add no further coats, will oil based puttys, like Minwax wood putty or Dap finishing putty, be ok, or might they damage the shellac?
If I decide to add another coat, can I use water based wood filler (Elmer’s, for example) first, or will it penetrate the earlier coats?
Any other possible problems or suggestions? Thanks.

Do a search on google for Konig soft wax filler. Comes in 150 colors with an applicator that makes the job easy. Much better than trying to use a wood patch filler.

You might want to consider making your own filler. I have been making some furniture from African Padauk and needed filler. Actually found a reference to a preview FWW issue that recommends mixing sawdust and shellac to make a filler. Works great.....
