Never done that but for thin stock I used to to a pilot hole for the nail. You can even countersink a touch for the head.
I find a fine nail from a nail gun almost never splits anything.
For thin stuff I'll cut the head off a nail and chuck it in a drill to bore pilot holes before driving a nail. The diamond tip of a regular wire nail does a nice job.
Cut the point of the nail off with a pair of dikes. The square end can be driven through without splitting.
