Need a belt sander w/ bench mount fence
I want to buy a belt sander that can be mounted on my workbench and has a fence or table so that I can sand the edge of a board square to its face. Ideally the axles and the belt of the sander would be vertical and the fence or table would be horizontal so gravity helps keep the face of the board in its proper position. Does such a thing exist?

Ridgid is the only company that makes a bench top, horizontal, osscilating belt sander. It is a great tool. The tables arent very flat and are hard to set perfectly square but I get perfect results; and I am picky.

Hello mudman,
As you suggested, I went right out to the local Home Depot and bought a Ridgid EB4424 Oscillating edge belt/sander.
It is a great tool! The table is dead flat and exactly perpendicular to the belt. Maybe they've improved their quality control. With the large table and long sanding platen, it is easy to sand the edge of a board smooth, flat, and perpendicular to the face. This is my first belt sander and I had to learn that it is the time and pressure per inch of edge that controls the removal rate. It is easy to under-sand the toward the ends and over-sand the center. But now I know...
Most of the Euro beltsanders have accessory sanding frames and stands. I have a 4x24 Bosch and the frame, but not the stand. I have the Rigid mentioned here and I agree that it's hard to get squared up. I also have a 6x48 sander but don't use it much they way you're thinking because the cross grain scratches are to hard to get rid of.

We trained hard, but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams, we would be reorganized. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing; and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization.

I have the PC oscillating spindle sander set up in a table like a router table. I have found for short boards (2' or less) that, with a guide board, I can make good glue edges. Just haven't tried anything over 2' long, yet.
