Need a double hinge solution for a 3″ deep box
Greetings!
My wife has tasked me with building a few pairs of earring display boxes like the ones we saw at a recent craft fair (first photo). She has two additional requirements for me: 1) make them 3” thick, and 2) make them double-jointed to display two ways (second photo). She wants them to hinge inward to display on long table runs and to close with a hasp to store and transport the earrings. In addition, she wants them to hinge outward and open to 270 degrees to display on the corners of tables.
I’ve looked at double hinges for cabinets or saloon doors, but none of them would seem to work for a 3” deep box (and they are too expensive). Is there someone smarter than me out there who can suggest a way I can allow her to hinge them from 0 to 120 degrees for long tables, but also be able to swing them out to 270 degrees to display on the corner of the table?
Thanks in advance!
Paul

You can use 2 sets of normal butt hinges with an intermediate hinge strip. It should latch closed without a problem.
Yes, I like this idea. Thank you for suggesting.
I might have to make one box an inch or so shorter so they close evenly and latch on the other end.

Have a look at the HP Spectre laptops. They have a hinge mechanism which achieves exactly what you need.
Essentially it is a block of metal with a hinge at both ends. Would be easy to make but you will need to experiment to get the dimensions right for your specific purpose - it's very similar to what _MJ_ suggested, but a bit neater. I think it would look good if made from contrasting timber.
Thanks for the idea.
Not sure if these are made in the size (and affordability) I'm seeking. I'll do some more searching.

Suggest you make your own out of some scrap hardwood.
Suggest you make your own out of some scrap hardwood. It's really not a difficult build. You could use a nail as a pin.
Double hinges are pretty inexpensive, as they are quite common.
Just google double hinge and many selections come up for less than $20
Thank you for your suggestion.
I Googled quite a bit before posting, and could not find double-action hinges that were 3" wide and affordable.
