Hello All,
I find myself doing more painted built-ins lately and am looking to bite the bullet on an HVLP gun with turbine. I have been applying mostly latex paint by all the usual methods from brush to conventional spray gun. I am not overly satisfied with either my method of application or the standard latex paints. So I guess I have a 2 part question.
1. Can anyone recommend a decent mid priced (~$500) HVLP set up? Will this be suitable for spraying latex paint and could I spray inside a clients home without creating a huge mess?
2. Are there other types of topcoats that will dry faster, spray better and be sandable in less than a decade. I generally use a mix of solid wood, plywood and MDF on most of my paint grade work if that is germane to this question.
Thanks,
Tom

I have a 3 stage Apollo HVLP system. I don't spray alot of paint, but when I do, it has served adequately. If I were doing it all the time, I believe I would get a good conversion gun, as my shop has a large 80 gallon compressor with about 25 cfm at 90 psi.
For spraying in the field, I think you'd find the hvlp adequate. I switched to a 2mm tip and use a little Floetrol, and it has been fine by me.

Jeff,
Thanks for the response.

I already had a compressor so I went with a conversion HVLP gun from Homestead Finishing. I purchased an Asturo ECO gun, it was about $350.00. I have only used it with oil based paint and lacquer finishes. Very pleased with the finish and easy to set up and adjust. I need to get a different set up and try latex. I would be hesitant to do any spraying in a customers home. You still get some overspray with the best guns. You can also get some great advise from Jeff Jewitt at Homestead Finishing.

Robert,
I had thought about geting a conversion gun but my compressor is a little on the whimpy side. I guess that I am/was leaning toward the HVLP (with turbine) would be so that I could do some touchup work on site.
Thanks,
Tom
