Greetings, woodpeople!
I am being offered about a 2-month job, one aspect of which is the layout and construction of a custom wooden ceiling treatment. I don’t have any details yet, other than they’re using red alder throughout.
The alder on the walls, the built-up crown and baseboard, etc. I have lots of experience with. But the ceiling panels I haven’t done before (Yippeeee!!!!).
Before meeting with these folks(soon…) I want to research what I can. I’ve downloaded the indexes from FW &FH, but can’t find anything… All my personal finish carpentry books have nothing on the subject…
Any suggestions on available info on this ?? Much appreciated!!

I don't know any of the brand names involved, but the "Hometime" television series did a house a year or so ago that had custom wood ceilings. Basically, there was a wood framework that was suspended from the ceiling. Into each opening, a custom built "tray" was placed.
As I recall, the framework was made from 1X4 material, with a routed/shaped edge. Eack of the "trays" was a flat panel, with crown molding around the sides. The overall effect was quite beautiful.
Wish I had pictures..........
Thanks. I found Hometime's website, but no luck searching it. I'll keep on keepin' on!
Steve,
I remember the coffered ceiling episode also. I typed "hometime coffered ceiling" into Yahoo, and lo and behold.

Hope this helps, if for no other reason than to provide a jumping off point for other sites.

I have done a few of these myself, and they are great fun for a finish carpenter. If you are looking for some ideas to get the ball rolling, the journal of light construction had a pretty good article on coffered ceilings I think last month. Also check Gary Katz's book Finish Carpentry. There is an entire chapter on the subject with some great ideas on speeding up the repetitive aspects of building these types of ceilings.
Someone beat me to it, but I second the nod to Katz. It's called Finish Carpentry: Efficient techniques . . . and it's ten bucks cheaper at Amazon than at JLC.
"The child is grown / The dream is gone / And I have become / Comfortably numb " lyrics by Roger Waters
WOW!! Thanks everyone! Talk about efficiency! I downloaded both articles from JLC. I ordered Katz's book from Amazon (great deals on USED books!). Met with the client today. He's offering a little less than I'm accustomed to, but I've been a bit spoiled in Santa Barbara...I love(most of the time...) this kind of project-- all custom wood walls & coffered ceilings(now I know what they're called :) ).
Thanks again for all the good resources!!!!
