To joint the edge of a board all you need is a straight edge of some type ( a long strip of 3/4" plywood about 6-8" wide and a pattern cutting router bit. Clamp the plywood on top of the lumber you want to joint and run the router along the edge of the ply = straight edge.
As to cabinet construction, all you are building is boxes. Don't over think it as I do. There are several books out there on cabinet making.
Good luck.
Thanks carlmccarty, great tip

On my first attempt at cabinet-building, I got a book from the rack at Lowe's. "Cabinets & Built-Ins" from Creative Homeowner Press. It had the dimensions for each of the pieces to make standard cabinets. The kitchen cabs I built have been in place for 12 years now - (and need a new coat of paint). There was one "oops" wall cabinet that's in the shop... Just make sure they're square :-)
Thanks Ray, am sure can do it with a good book.

Thanks Ray, since you built your kitchen cabinets 12 years ago l am hoping you can help me with below questions.
My kitchen cabinets in the half of our duplex, my wife and l live in we bought in 1987 when we built this half of the house for my Dad to have his own self contained living area until he passed away in 1995.
These cabinets we bought at rona, then $ 2,800.00 they are still solid but drawer fronts and doors are like paper covered.
I resently bought 280 bd ft of oak allot is red oak, 4'', 6'', 8'' wide boards all 8 ft long.
Not sure how to reface the 4 ends maybe 1/4'' oak plywood then nail on what do you think?
For doors, drawers to reface the 1'' thick oak boards could plan down to 3/4'' with my 12.5 '' planer but don't have jointer to take bow out of boards or curves any idea's cheap canadian tire jointers with detachable planers they any good?
for my daughters kitchen could glue oak boards together or maybe dowel together to make sides, dividers, floor etc if can get flat, square as needed above for mine.
Have a few kitchen cabinet books just wondering the 1'' x 3'' they use on top to support kitchen double sink and 1' x3' on back for nailer support anything specific l need to do to make strong enough main concern is sink 36'' cabinet.
Would making doors with 1x2 or 1 x3 picture like mitered corners with 1/4'' panel glued nailed to back look ok or do l have to do groves tto slide panel in?
Sorry for length of this message hope you can help me if you have sketches of kitchen base sink cabinet showing 1 x 3 for support etc could you email to me ?
Thanks jim
