Folks, I recently purchased a mass produced wooden (ash) toboggan that came unfinished (as most mass produced toboggans are). I have now seen a couple of web pages that sell premium wooden toboggans that are “built to last” and are finished with two coats of a heavy exterior urathane. My thought is that before I begin to use my new wooden toboggan I would like to apply two coats of a heavy exterior urathane to protect it and try to get as much life out of it as possible. I was hoping that folks with more experience than I would be able to share their opinion on which brand of heavy exterior urathane I should use. I live in the Chicagoland area and I have stores like Home Depo, Sears, Ace Hardware, Wal Mart, and Menards in my area. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance. – Paul.

I would use the exterior penetrating oil products offered by the Sikkens Company.
*Go into any paint store and ask for an exterior grade polyurethane. There are many different brands, just be sure it is for exterior use. Be aware that polyurethane needs to be applied in a temperature that is not below 65 degrees and it will take 24 hours between coats. Also, the develope full cure it can take up to four weeks. As long as it has an odor, it is still curing.
