Need good price on Lie Nielson planes
Am looking for a #7 and #112 (large scraping plane). Anyone know where I can pick them up at a decent price? List is $400 for the #7, and $210 (I think) for the #112. L/N sells them for 10% off at a woodworking show near you, but they don’t attend very many shows. They were not at the last one here in SoCal.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!!!!!
John

I’ve seen some on e-bay under retail price. Take a look at this link.

HI,
Right here in S. Calif. is:
http://www.CraftsmanStudio.com/
Bill Kohr, the owner is just great! I've spent a few minutes with him each order talking tools and woodworking. He's quite knowledgeable and can advise if your indecisive and he doesn't try to sell the most expensive item but the right one. Highly Recomended!! Check the site the discounts are reflcted when you add the items to your shopping cart, but your not obliged to buy at that point. He's in san Diego area and I'm about 40 miles away and get my orders in 2 days max with reasonable postage.
My experience is people are all over LN on Ebay. I see things got for more than you can get them at Craftsman studio and elsewhere so don't hold your breathe waiting for a great deal there. You'll be compteing with me anyway!<G!>

John,
You may want to buy the Clifton No. 7 jointer for about $100 less.
I have one, as well as some other Cliftons and L-Ns - similar level of quality. Bedrock design, etc.
Gosh, I hate to post this because the folks at L-N are so incredibly nice, and the tools are so great. I've never bought an L-N tool I didn't like.
The iron on the Clifton requires more honing out of the box than the L-N. Once you get it scary sharp, however, and get the depth of cut and mouth adjusted right for your working style and the type of wood you're planing, it will hold an edge for a long time. Once you get it dialed in, in will plane like Jack the Bear for a long time! (Stock car racing expression in honor of upcoming Daytona 500).
Goo luck, Ed
i think that the expression jack the bear [or doing things like jack the bear] has its origin with a fellow who used to play the piano incredibly well in the bordellos of new orleans named ...wait for it ... jack the bear thats allr
Oh I can't believe that the early pioneers of NASCAR - guys like Curtis Turner, Joe Weatherly, and Junior Johnson would have ever been anywhere near the bordellos of N'awlins!
I just don't think you can get a deal on L-N tools. They don't make very many of them, they sell all they make, so there just isn't a discount market. I'd love to be proven wrong, because then I'd own more of their tools. I guess the fact that I feel that way shows why there are no discounts.
From what I've seen, LN's are very seldom discounted. Won't do you much good but there's a 10% discount when buying at the factory store which turns into a 5% savings when you figure in Maine sales tax. According to their website, they'll be in Sacremento in April and Pomona in May .......... might be worth the wait.

John,
To echo the answer you got on WC, because apparently not everyone over here is aware, both Fine Tool Journal and The Best Things discount Lie-Nielsen products.
Alan
Already bought both planes from The Best of Things. Great prices, no upcharging on shipping, and your card doesn't get charged till they ship. Now, THAT is customer service.
Regards,
John
I buy LN from fine tool journal also, nice to deal with and cheapest price with
NO TAX NO SHIPPING!makinsawdust
That's the guy who I recently cancelled my order with. $195 for a #7 (Best of Things were $6 cheaper by the way), which isn't bad, but at the WW show where I bought it, he promised shipping from his inventory as soon as he got back to Maine on the 27th. Well, after not receiving my order (which he charged my card for on the 25th), I called him yesterday only to find out neither of the planes are in stock and he had no firm idea of when they would even arrive. "Maybe next week".
While I understand L/N's production speed is beyond his control, he assured me at the show that he actually had inventory, which he now admits he didn't. I'm also awaiting my refund, though I'm sure he'll come through on that. Nice guy personally, but a little sloppy on the details.
Regards,
John
sorry to hear that...Best things charges shipping whichevens out
and I did not have any problems with more than one order I have gotten from him, It is not his fault LN is back orderedmakinsawdust
John,
I, too, ordered from Clarence at the Fine tool Journal booth at Woodworks. The prices were not quite 10% off, but he didn't charge sales tax or shipping and also knocked off a little if I bought in quantity, so I bit the bullet. I figured I saved about 11% off the list price.
You didn't say when you cancelled, but my order also included a No. 7 and No. 112. After not getting anything for almost two weeks, I e-mailed them early yesterday morning and received a reply later the same day stating the order already shipped on Monday the 3rd. Sorry to hear that your experience was less than satisfactory. I agree that they are a little sloppy on the details (a shipping notification would have been nice), but hope it will be worth it in the end.

I too was looking for a good deal on a LN #7 and wound up with the low angle #7 1/2 for $100 less. I don't know all the shortcomings but so far it has been all that I have needed. The blade is a full 1/4" thick and the whole tool is very impressive.
Good luck
Richard
I cancelled Thursday the 6th and ordered from The Best Things on Friday.
I'm looking forward to receiving them. Good luck with your new planes!!!
Regards,
John
Seems kind of odd since mine were shipped on the third and just arrived yesterday. They work magnificently, by the way. That No. 7 is a monster. And the blade for the No. 112 is massive. I just might put away my card scraper for good! I'm sure you will enjoy your planes immensely.
