Have decided to complicate my life by making kitchen upper cab doors with glass panel and mullions, running both vert and horiz, in top third. Bottom 2/3 is ply panels (2) in regular frame. Any tips about fitting mullions and glass? I’m assuming half lap joints for mullion (1/2″ wide) intersections but am unsure about fitting them to frame and about mounting single sheet of glass behind them. Am concerned that putty may be too cheesey. Frame members will be square in section, that is no fancy profiles, and probably cope and stick if I can find router bit set with sq profile. If not I’ll break down and do m & t. Thanks in advance.

MLCS has some good info on using their bits. Instructions/videos that may give you some ideas.

Hi stu ,
1/2" is small imo , to begin with but certainly can be done .
When you get to the frame , glue and spring clamps , the strength will come from all the joints not just one .
You can fit a single piece of glass behind and use clear silicone glue , or make single lites where a separate piece is in each opening .The silicone may help hold the mullions a bit also .
By making separate lites the parts will lap or rabbet onto the backsides as well , giving more glue surface , that is how I make them . I end up having to make little filler pieces on the ends of some of the pieces where the backs get cut off .
The door frames can easily be made on the TS , a set of cutters is nice but you do not have to have item for this task .
good luck dusty

I have only made one set of glass doors with mullions.. I used the little rubber balls to hold the glass. Rockler or Woodcraft.. Not sure where I got them.. Worked for me...
Maybe some help for you.

I made some muntin cabinet doors recently. I took pictures of the process but my camera stopped working during the project. I made a basic M&T frame then used a rabbet bit and squared up the corners. I made a T shaped muntin and used a saddle/lap joint where they met. The ends were lapped to fit the rabbet in the frame. I used angled pins to attach the muntins to the frame, they can't pull out. I made some small glass stop moldings. I used a pin head drop of silicone in the four corners, laid the glass in and used the glass stop moldings.
Once the muntins were attached, I put a large base on my router and profiled the front but I don't have a picture. I didn't want square edges. The glass stops actually looked great, much like a traditional shaped muntin. I could have used stops front and back on a flat muntin.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Thank you very much! In this case each picture is worth 10,000 words and far better than anything I found in books. Coincidently the pattern is exactly what I'm doing for the top third of the doors and reflects the style of windows we have (Anderson Prairie). Thank you again
Glad it helped.Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Very nicely done indeed , as are all your offerings.

Thank you, Dusty, right back at ya. If only I could keep a camera working and remember to bring it. Too many projects go out the door without any pictures.Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Nice work!
