Need plans:Home-brew grinding/sharpening
My bench grinder is useless for anything longer than about 4″–the motor is bigger than the wheels & gets in the way. I’d like to make a grinding system for sharpening everything from my lawnmower blades to chisels, planer knives–everything. I don’t want to invest nearly $400.00 on a Tormek or the like. I envision a raised horizontal arbor belt-driven from a motor in a cabinet below. Variable speed would be real nice. A water tub could be placed under one of the wheels for wet work (if the motor can be made to spin slow enough not to sling water).
Has anyone seen plans for such a machine? I don’t know if I’ll follow the plans to the letter or modify to suit the available junk I already have which I can use.

Don't you hate that? You could invest $700 instead, in a Baldor with 8" or 10" wheels. :) Plenty of clearance over the motor.
You may want to check-out thread 6816.1. Someone made a slow speed grinder. It is simple to change wheel speeds by changing the sheave (pulley) diameters. A drill press (at least mine) is a good example. Twenty years ago I made a variable speed polisher from a few large oak blocks, a mandrel, and two sheaves -- all available at the local hardware store for under $20.00. Of course, that store is now out of business, thanks to some large chain store. FWW also has some back articles on sizing the sheaves for the correct speed. You may want to do a search on back issues.

Thanks, Dan. That thread contained a link to another thread which had a link to prairietool.com. This may be just the kick in the seat I need to build my own wet grinder.

Do a search for lapidary saws and polishers. There are a few different setups like you mentioned and you could build something similar.
The setups I'm thinkning of have a motor in a cabinet with the grinding wheels mounted in tubs for wet grinding and horizontally mounted wheels.
