Need recomndtion on table saw
A friend has about 850 to $900 to spend on a table saw. What is considered the best? Are there any good reviews in any woodworking magazines that you recall?
Thanks,
Alan – planesaw

For ~ $900 you can get into a Grizzly 1023 or Shop Fox 1677 cabinet saw. Otherwise he's buying on the expensive end of contractor saws. Nice saws no doubt, but they're not cabinet saws.
If he doesn't have and/or doesn't want to install 220v, his choices will be more limited....perhaps back to the contractor saw category, in which case I'll point out the Fine Woodworking chose the General International 50-185M1 ($650) #1 over DeWalt, Delta, Jet, PM, Griz, bridgewood, and Woodtek. (Besides that....it's a really nice contractor saw :)
Grizzly 1023SL. Great saw. Great fence. Great value.

Ditto scottie and the blues bass player on the Griz unless he can find a used Uni or PM 66. The market is not exactly flooded for those.
The Griz is a good machine at a respectable price!

Alan, you asked about magazine reviews. The April 2003 Woodworker's Journal has a review by Kelly Mehler on a wide range of cabinet saws. In your friend's price range, the Grizzly 1023SL is the one that was in the review (he didn't review the Shop Fox, but I'm under the impression that it sells for more like $1200 or $1300; could be wrong).
The Grizzly 1023SL is really a winner for someone who can't come up with $1500 or more for a cab saw. It won't have the longer rails and extension table that the other big saws come with, but the extension table can be made (Mehler suggests doing that to support the fence) and longer rails could be added a few years down the road when budget permits.
Personally, I would caution him to be stay away from the 1023Z, which has a different fence, one that I've seen complaints about. If you're surprised to see such praise of Grizzly here, I'll reassure you that it's based on reports from users who have really put it to the test!

alan,
I have the Grizzly 1023s (right tilt) and it's a great. Mine is set up with 26" to the right...however, some have setup the rails with about 38" to the right...same rails moved over....they include a drill bit and tap for the screws in the carton.....just a bit more info....
