Need shaper cutter set for V4E T&G
Hi, new to the forum and in need of some help locating a shaper cutter set to make 11/16″ – 3/4″ T&G with bevels on both sides of the board (V4E, V groove 4 edges) so you can flip the board over if you like. All of my searches and local inquires have only netted sets with one bevel and I was told this is a custom set costing some $800. I have all three T&G cutter sets from Grizzly and a Grizzly shaper table with a small power feeder. I am mostly using Douglas fir but some occasional alder.
While on the subject of T&G is it common to have two different setups for the tongue and the groove? I have to adjust the height and the fence everytime I change the cutter, seems like the cutters would be made to use the same adjustments.
Thanks

My T&G set up is also reversible and yes you have to fuss around doing the switch. The answer would be to have two and dedicated and if you do it alot or are doing a lot might be worth it. For the bevel I would use a router / router table or your shaper and do the extra step. Tools / tooling is priced based on how many are sold. Example: circular saws, a 7 1/4" saw is relatively inexpensive and they sell thousands, of them but if you go to a 10" saw by the same brand it has the same motor ,amperage ,all the same the only difference is the guard and carriage but the price will more than double - go to 15" saw the price will triple. Someone went to the trouble of manufacturing a special cutter to do what you want to do but I doubt they sell many and millwork shops usually have the capability to grind their own for special purposes.
Someone gave me a bunch of standing edge metal roofing. All I needed was the hand seamer specific for that type of roofing, it's not more complicated than a pair of channel locks but when I looked it up it was $1000! I ended up making one.
OK thanks, I have added the bevels on the back using the shaper table and 1/2" router bit adapter but that adds two more setups, just looking for an easier way. It seems like sombody would make a stack-able version or modular.
Put a call in to Whiteside and tell them what you're looking for. They are very helpful folks. They might be able to put a combo together for you from a mix of their stackable bit sets... or they may just tell you which sets you should buy to get there.
If you're doing a lot of this having two setups makes the most sense, and the power feed is a huge plus.
I did check with Whiteside, they recommended a shaper cutter.
Thanks
Did you look at router bits, rather than just shaper cutters? There are more varieties of routers bits sold, and I'd guess you can find what you're looking for off the shelf. Or perhaps it's cheaper to have a custom router bit ground than a shaper cutter.
Freeborn has a stock cutter meeting my needs, looks like it is a stackable set but trying to get more info from my dealer, not sure if it is a pair or if I have to reconfigure the stack each time, ready for this, $609 plus tax (ouch!)
Daaaaaaaaaammmmm!
I know, but I think there is a payback in a couple of months, but I have to reconfigure the stack every time, or I can buy two!
