Need some advice on wood selection, or is this possible
Howdy!,
I’m wanting to build a vanity and sink for my bathroom. I’d like the vanity and sink to be a single unit, all wood. Basically, I’d like to build a vanity that has the sink carved into it in a seamless way, and I’d like to do it out of wood. Is this possible? Is there a wood that can withstand repeated wettings from water as well as the all of the other substances that touch a bathroom sink? I do not think I want to epoxy it, but I’m fine with stains and the like.
I was looking at teak, but it’s too expensive. What about white oak?
I’m aware that this is a VERY ambitious undertaking for a newbie to wood working, but I like to go big, and I’m the ambitious type.
Any help would be appreciated.

Is this not possible?
I guess no one else has had this idea or seen it, or can do it?
Hi, mkalbow!
If you choose a laminate or wood countertop material, a sink with a tap area would be the best choice, since mounting the tap straight onto wood or laminate can create risk with moisture. It is also worthwhile to have at least some stainless steel drainage area or working surface next to the bowl, since wood is not the best material to withstand splatters of water and setting wet dishes on.

semi-gloss urethane. It'll resist anything but direct blows from pointed or sharp implements.

you might look at cypress as an option.
There is no such wood that will not turn greyish or show some weathering if not protected from water by a barrier coat like epoxy or varnishes. White oak will resist as will other boatbuilding woods but will rapidly turn gray if the finish is punctured and will require a lot of sanding to recover its color, I would not recommend. Mahogany, Accacia, Afromosia are good candidates but expensive. If you are willing to use epoxy, I would recommend western red cedar like used in the cedar stripped canoes. It is soft but easily repaired and lives well in a humid environment. You could also elect to insert a sink made of natural material in or under your countertop such as this one which has whitstood many years of abuse in my man cave.
