Art,
If you have a lathe that is adequate for the job except that it is too short, you can mount the tailstock on a appropriate sized wood block and bolt it to the benchtop off the right end of the lathe. By flipping the workpiece end for end, after turning down one half of its length, you can use the tool rest to work on the entire length of the workpiece.

The main problem is that I don't own any lathe. That is why I'm looking to rent some time on one. I just can't see buying a machine that I will only use once every year or so, plus storage space is an issue in the shop. I used to use my buddies lathe but he moved his shop to Western Pa, just too far to travel.
Thanks Art
From a liability standpoint I would think most folks would not rent time on their equipment. I know you would rather do it yourself but the odds are greater to find a turner to do the job for you.
Visit your friend in western Pa. And while your ther..........

Looks like it might come to that.
I have a friend who lives outside of York, PA. How is that, distance wise?

About 3 hours not to bad. Looks like I just might buy one before the price of steel goes to high.
