AMT has been out of the tool business for some time, but you should be able to get a generic replacement. What kind of center is it? Morse taper? Threaded?
thanks to all for the replies. the center is threaded. its 34" diam. and, although only 58" in length, i counted 5 threads within 14" of length and therefore id say its 20 tpi.
Drive spurs are usually mounted on an unthreaded Morse taper shank that goes inside the headstock shaft. The threaded outside is for mounting face plates and three and four jaw chucks. The outer thread is probably a 3/4 by 16, 3/4 by 20 isn't a common size.
Hopefully your lathe does have a Morse taper, if it doesn't, and you need a drive spur that threads on, you will be looking for a fairly exotic item that will be difficult to find and may have only been used on AMT lathes.
If the lathe does have a Morse taper, a #1 taper will be just a little less than 1/2" in diameter at the inboard end of the shaft, a #2 taper will be just under 3/4" in diameter at the inboard end. You can get drive centers from Sears and Grizzly and a number of other sources.
Hope this helps, John W.
thanks john. im afraid im the proud owner of an exotic tool, the manufacturers of which, are no longer manufacturing.
Go on e-bay and type in "AMT lathe". You will find someone who is selling the parts for the lathe you own. He lists the headstock, tailstock, and the tool rest. The photo of the headstock doesn't show the spindle end so I can't tell if there is a tapered bore.
You can contact the seller at the bottom of the page listing the parts, with luck, the guy may have a threaded on drive center.
Good luck, John W.
Now I'm confused. Are you describing the spindle nose, like this?

If so, does it have a tapered hole, like the one in the picture? If the outside diameter of the threads is 3/4" and there is a tapered hole, it is almost certainly a Morse Taper #1. As a previous response noted, most spur centers come on a tapered shank and look like this.

Thanks Uncle Dunc. The center is threaded. There's no morse taper. It fits onto a threaded shaft. Eef
eef ,
Depending on which type your machine needs , Sears may be a source and possibly Grizzly tools as well .
You need to determine the taper of the center you need. If it is a small lathe it is likely a #1 morse. A larger one may be a #2. Either one is available from Woodcraft.

Forget OEM! Packard WoodWorks carries generic lathe parts. Google for the website.

I hope you can find one. I used to have one of those lathes, and if I remember correctly, it uses a unique drive center. The center is hexagonal and threads on to the spindle, instead of having a Morse taper like most lathes.Remember, AMT tools are bottom-end, and they cut a lot of corners in their construction.
I think eBay might be the best place to look for parts.
Good luck!

Have an old AMT (Craftsman) lathe in the basement that I have been ready to get rid of.
Send me your mailing addy and I'll drop it in the mail. No charge.

Thanks!! I'd love to have the lathe. Sorry I took so long to get back to you, but I was having trouble retrieving my messages. My address is: 505 La Paloma Ave., Alhambra CA 91801 My last name is VanIersel. That's really nice of you and let me know if there's anything I can do for you.
Sincerely, Eef

I think I mis-communicated. I'll send the spur center , the whole lathe would cost just too much to mail.
I will get it in the mail by Saturday so you can expect it by the end of next week.
that spur ctr. will be most welcome. thanks again.
