Need supplier of Lathe drive centers
I have an old homemade lathe. The drive center is missing. I need one with a straight shank, not a morse taper. Can anyone supply me with the name of some one who might make or supply such an item?

Doug, there is a company called Gilson Machines that carries straight spur centers. They did not have a website as I recall. They advertise in some woodworking magazines. Sorry I don't have a phone # or address, I am sure someone else will post here with the correct address.

Thanks for your quick response. I have looked in the library and all over the internet for Gilson Machines but no luck. Perhaps someone else might know where I can locate this company or another that might make drive centers with straight shanks.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

A year or so ago I was talking with a fellow who had recently bought an old Powermatic lathe. As I remember the lathe was missing a couple of handwheels , cast iron motor cover, handle to tighten the tool rest, drive center etc. He called Powermatic for help. They had a couple of parts he needed and the manual. For the rest of the missing parts they gave him a name/number of a fellow down in Georgia (I think near Atlanta) who has a graveyard of old lathes. He was able to furnish the rest of the missing parts to this guy. Why not give Powermatic a call and ask them for the name of the guy in Georgia who has the parts for old lathes. Maybe he'll have what your looking for. Ken

I needed a live center for a homemade lathe years ago, I purchase a cheap new one from Highland Hardware and took it to a local machine shop who machined it to fit for $20.00. You might try this avenue. Good Luck.
Doug , In the past Sears has had lathe centers . Give them a try . good luck
In a machine tool supply, ask for a spur center with a tapered shaft, also a taper to straight adapter to fit.it and the lathe. If the lathe has an adjustable chuck, any size that fits it will do. Stein
Since you say it's a home made lathe, I'll assume the 'spindle is just a collar attached to the motor's shaft. (with two setscrews to hold the spur center. If that's the case, just ask for a spur center with a strait shaft to fit the collar. (Probably 1/2" or 5/8"?)
