Not sure if this has been a question lately but im in need to purchase a dado set and i definitely cant afford the 250 dollar range. I will be using it for MDF and Veneered Plywood. Any advice would be helpful. I did a search here but havent seen any real good threads.

You definitely need a quality blade if you're going to work MDF (wear on teeth) and veneered ply (chip-prone). You can get the Freud SD-0306 6" safety dado, which is the set I use, at McFeely's for $110.95. Amazon no longer carries it, which is a shame!
The SD0506 runs $179.95 It has more teeth and a negative hook. Here's a chart of all their dados.
I've used my 0306 in solid stock and plywood, but not MDF.

Did you look at the recent FWW re dado sets?
Yes, I did, when replying to Centaur's post. He's looking for a less expensive, but quality set. The Freud 300 series fits the bill, IMO. The top-ranked sets in the article, even in 6" versions, are going to run over $150. If he's going to work alot of MDF, a "best value" blade might not last long, hard to tell.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Jamie,
The SD308 is available most everywhere (here's the link to Amazon: SD308).
The Dadoes we offer are:
SD208/SD206 -12° hook
SD306/SD308/SD310/SD312 +15° hook
SD408 +15° hook
SD506/SD508 -12° hook
SD606/SD608 -12° hook
The last number of each denotes the diameter.
For a budget dado to cut veneers, Melamine, MDF and Solid wood I would recommend the SD206 or SD208.
The SD308 is really better suited to solid wood as it tends to be a little aggressive for some veneers and laminates but the higher hook angle makes it feed more easily through hardwoods.Charles M

Hi Charles. The 306 has been discontinued by Amazon. Sorry, in my email I referred in general to the 300 series. forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Ok well I kind of expected the exact responses I was given. Im going to go with the Freud SD208. It about fits my budget for now and Ive just started to get back into woodworking its been a little while. Cant wait to get the blade ive got a brand new Grizzly TS to put it on G0576 left tilt. Very excited here lol Thanks for the help guyscentaur76
You won't regret that choice. I can't imagine needing a better dado than the 208 that I bought last Sunday. Thing's great. Consider the DD208, though--it appears to be identical with a PermaShield coating, and has the Diablo name. I've asked Charles in this thread if it is indeed the same, you can look for his response.CharlieI tell you, we are here to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different. --K Vonnegut
Geeze, have those prices gone up or what?!
I think that is the same model I got about a year ago for $80!
Maybe its the high Euro value?

Whooops! Mine was a 208, not a 308. Been a good dado. jt8

Yeah, I corrected myself after looking. It is a 208, ergo the lower price. It is listed for $94. Mine was $80-ish on sale.
Been a good dado. Very good value.

Glad to see a Freud person here. Can you tell me how to best get a couple of Freud blades sharpened? Can I send them back to you? Thanks,
Mark
Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk, cut it with an ax.
Mark,We don't offer a sharpening service. I recommend checking with local cabinet shops to see who they use and try them. Otherwise you can call Freud at (800) 334-4107 and our sales department may be able to locate a Freud dealer in your area that also offers sharpening services.Charles M

Charles, I recently blew up my cheapo dado (hmm...there's a good name for a garage band...) and needed a new one. I went to Home Depot to get an SD208, and came home with the DD208, the Diablo one. It looked identical except for the PermaShield Coating. It was exactly the same price, $98--a bargain if you ask me. Is it indeed the same? And I've been thrilled, by the way. The difference is amazing (which actually is true of every Freud blade I've ever bought [not to brown-nose.] I absolutely LOVE my Diablo 80T cutoff blade.)CharlieI tell you, we are here to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different. --K Vonnegut
Charlie,The SD208 and DD208 are the same in every respect except that the DD208 has the addition of the PermaSHIELD coating.Charles M
