I have a PM 54a 6″ jointer. The blades will need to be sharpened soon.
1. I’ve noticed that LV/Veritas has a honing guide to sharpen jointer blades up to 8” wide. Does anyone have experience with these things? Do they work?
2. If I want to get them professionally sharpened, can anyone recommend a service that will do this?

Took mine to Woodworkers Warehouse. They had them done for around $15. Took about 2 weeeks, but man, were those things sharp. I now have two sets so when I put a new set in, the others go get sharpened.

Is this the place you're talking about?

Yes, thats it. They send them out to a sharpening service.
Call up some local woodworking shops and see if there is something local.

I made my own jig for sharpening my 6" jointer blades. It looks like a fat wooden "T" with two wheels on the bottom of the "T". In the crossbar at the top, I used my table saw to saw a 1/8" slot about 1/2" deep and at the proper sharpening angle. I put a jointer blade in the slot and wedge flat wooden toothpicks along the edge to hold the blade in. The wheels were made with a 2" hole cutter and fastened to the "T" with a long 1/4" bolt.
I use sandpaper glued to aluminum plate for the sharpening and I go down to 600 grit being the finest grit.
It makes very sharp edges that are very straight and doesn't take much time. Maybe 30 minutes total for all 3 blades.

Mike in Katy,
Do mean Katy, Texas? That's where I live, and thought I knew most woodworkers in the Katy area.

Yup, I'm in Katy TX. North of I10 on Fry road. My back door looks directly out to Ritters Frozen Custard. Where you?

I am actually in old Katy on the North side just South of Morton Ranch Road.
Wow, the differance between the people's use of their equipment..! I buy several sets of blades when I buy a piece of equipment because I will dull them so quickly. (I own 18 sets for my 6 inch portable planner) I go with 5 to 10 sets at a time and visit several times a month..
Now to answer you question..
most good saw blade sharpening shops will also sharpen jointer/planer blades.. However I found that if you take them to printing service places they will sharpen them faster and better for less money..
they use exactly the same kind of blades in printing. Printers demand instant service in 24 hours or less so most printers service places are open 7 days a week..
