Several new portable planers have come out in the past year, some with two feed rates (for rough dimensioning and finish planing).
I am planning to buy a new planer soon, and would appreciate hearing some user feedback and recommendations. Also, are there any models “soon to be released” that could be worth waiting for?

Dont know about the "New releases" But Im getting ready to retire my delta 12 1/2. If I can adj it better. But If I was going to buy a new one it would have to be the new default or the 13" delta. I swing towards delta. I just like their tools.

What do you mean by that, RonT?
I mean dewalts service absolutely unequivically sucks. I heard from a couple of local tool stores that I buy tools from, that dewalt reconizes they are hurting at their factory service centers as far as being customer friendly for repairs ect. The guys at 2 different tool stores one in Anahiem Ca and another in Whittier Ca in 2 different cities in 2 different Counties LA and Orange, told me dewalt has a guy that they are paying big bucks to go to the different service centers and help them set up a more customer friendly environment. The one in Anaheim is/was the one I delt with, they are as about useless as screen doors on a submarine.
My last experiance:
I call them,
Q;Do you have a power cord for a dw421 ROS
A; We have a lot of power cords
Q; Do you have one for a DW 421 ROS
A; Ill check
5-10 mins later
A: yea we got one
Q: How much
A; I didnt check
Q; does it have the tips for it installed on the cord.
A: Dont know
So figureing the cord would have the tips or they sell them seperate , I drive down there walk up to the counter and wait about (no kidding) 15 min while this guy is helping someone on the phone..slowly..
DW; Can I help you
Me: I need a power cord for dw421 ROS
DW Ill go check.....
10 min later
DW Here it is....
I look at it no tips (It need special tips to hook up the cord)
Me; it doesnt have the tips, Do you sell them seperatly
DW No we buy them in bulk with dumb look on his face.....
So Go to local electronics store with the tips in hand, I ask if they sell them . They tell me no they are made special for the manufacturer (DW)
Conclusion, they just wanted me to pay them to repair it by not having or selling the parts to the public. I tossed that POS into the trash and went and bought a PC. I am happy as a clam now with the ROS.
Now I just bought a planer tell me what do you think, Did I buy a DW......

Thanks for the insight! I guess I'm lucky I've never had to deal with one of their servicenters... I have several DW tools (chop saw, portable TS, biscuit joiner, rt. angle drill, jigsaw) and have been happy with their performance & features. Sure hope they can get their act together with the customer service end of the business...
Yea thats been my only real complaint about them. The tools are good but if ya need to ever repair them..forget it...

I have the Delta 13 inch model and I like it. The blades are reversible and VERY easy to change. I have not tried the new Dewalt model but have looked at the display at the big orange box and it looks nice. Three blades rather that two. It also has the two speeds, but to be honest, I can't tell much different with the Delta. The only other thing with the Delta is if you have a very long board (over 10 feet) you have to give the rollers some help as they are not strong enough to pull that weight. I just finished a built in gun case for a customer ( 8' high and 10' long) and make some of the molding out of ruff sawn 8/4 cypress 12 feet long. The planer head did fine but the rollers had trouble pulling the board through.
