I was running my second batch of poplar boards thru when it stopped feeding. Took off the side cover and there was my front sprocket in three pieces. I have read this is a problem. If anyone had this problem what did you do? Return to store or fix it yourself. Was the part expensive and are they available and how much trouble was it to fix? Thanks for any help you can offer. Oh I tried to call Dewalt but off course they don’t work on weekends like us. Thanks again RICK

Rick, go to http://www.dewaltservicenet.com/ServiceNet/logon.asp. Once there, you can join the Dewalt Service Net (Free), find parts and order them. Of course, if you service the machine yourself, you will likely void the warranty. Since it is still fairly new, I would take it in and have it repaired. A good dealer may choose to replace the entire unit rather than suffer from a disgruntled customer.
Thanks for the information. I was just at the dewalt site checking out the price of the part. I guess I will call Lowes and see if they will replace it or if I have to fix it? THANKS AGAIN Rick
If its still new take it back to the store. I have heard on another website http://www.woodwoking.org that someone else or 2 had the same problem with the planer.

Rick,
I reported this problem on this site about 3 months ago; I tried to get parts from the service center but they had none, nor when they called "parts headquarters" did they have any. Fortunately, I had bought the planer from Woodcraft and they gave me new one.
That's the GOOD NEWS. Last week the same thing happened with the replacement and I took it back and received another replacement( 3rd machine). ( If it happens again, I am getting a different planer.) Both planers lasted about 3 months of rather consistent "hobbiest" use.
I thought that last weeks occurence could have happened when a plank that had a rough edge got caught on the side guides but I am not sure . If a board jams and the rollers are so tight against the board that they don't slip, then the sprocket probably just snaps. I reported on my previous problem that when I went to the DW service center, they had sprockets from the older model and they were much beefier than the new "broken" sprocket. I think there is definitely a design problem either in a sprocket that is not stout enough or a lack of a clutch mechanism that stops the rollers when a board is jammed; HOWEVER, it could be simply a failed sprocket from metal fatigue.
I truly like the features on the DW 735 and that is the reason I am trying it again. While my local Woodcraft probably hates to see me coming, they have been great with accepting the broken machine back without question. As I said in my last occurence, I am glad I didn't have to ship it back to Toolcrib or other online tool supplier and wait for who knows how long for a replacement.
Good luck!
Thanks everyone for all the information. I guess it is just a hit or miss problem. Anyway I went to Lowes and they replaced it with a new one so I guess I will see how long this one lasts. RICK

Thanks for the information. My new planner does not cut as well as the broken one and the positive stops are off on the new one I just hope it lasts longer than the first. RICK
Rick I had the same problem with my 735. Called Dewalt and they asked if I had looked at the sprockets. I did and it was busted. Took it in to the local Dewalt factory store and they took two weeks to fix it. Funny thing is that they said that since I had opened it up (per their instructions) I had technically violated the warrenty. Anyways it is back up and running. Hopefully it was a one time deal.
Better late than never... If you are looking at buying a new 735 then make sure you check the production run date code on the box. Make sure you get one that is in a factory sealed box or get a guarantee that the box that you are getting is the same one the planer came in. Any who.... the date code needs to be in the 2004 series. This is the redesigned version I am told and does not have the problem with the bearings seizing up and breaking the gears.
Sincerely;
The Tool Guy
