New DeWalt planer — first review?
In the earlier thread about the new DeWalt planers, ToolDoc said “There [sic] at all the Big WWW Magazines gettin tested soo watch for your favorite mag to have test results very soon….” Well, he was right!…Just got the new issue of Wood mag. The reviewed the new DeWalt 13″ planer DW735. Wow! It ain’t cheap ($480), but what a machine. Their test took 1/16″ deep cut on 7″ wide red oak, and they claim no “bogging, divoting, or sniping” and smoother than the Delta 22-580, with less snipe (“almost nothing”). It has an automatic cutterhead lock (oh, yes!), and a 3-knife cutterhead as mentioned, which gives it 96 to 179 cuts per inch, depending on feed speed.
Heavy SOB (92 lbs.) but nothing a nice mobile cart couldn’t handle. Totally cool looking too, very different from what’s currently out there.

Sounds to me like your Rigid has a problem! I have simply the Delta 12.5" and there's no way my jointer could do as good or as fast a job as it does. I suppose the planer would slow way down if the depth of cut was too big.
The new DeWalt isn't even on their web site yet, but you'd think they'd bring it to the shows this season. If they don't, they're giving up ground to Delta!
How's the show at the Tacoma Dome?? I find the one at the Seattle Convention Center a bit crowded in the aisles. How scrunched is it in Tacoma?forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
My Ridgid is slow compared to the big industrial planers I used at work. It's also slow compared to my 3hp 12" jointer at home. I've had it for maybe 3 years and it seems to cut about the same as what the other owners of lunchbox planers report. The big machines don't slow down. You can go through a stack of wood in about 1/3 the time with a big planer compared to a lunchbox, and that is not using the ability to put as many boards width wise as will fit on a big planer. My jointer is almost as fast as the big planers but I have to re-cut the boards on the Ridgid, plus I have to watch the edges and not over cut. As far as quality of cut the Ridgid leaves a better cut than anything I have ever seen.
It's been about 8 years since I went to a WW show at the Dome and I don't remember much about it.

If you're used to such heavy-duty equipment, doesn't seem you're going to be happy with any benchtop planer. No big stationary planers around for you to nab??forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I said the Ridgid was slow but I didn't say I wasn't happy with it. Like it said, it gives the best finish of any planer or jointer I have ever used. The big machines use lots of narrow steel drive rollers with teeth so you can cut many boards at one time. The problem is each one has its own pressure spring plus there is an adjustment to control the whole row of drive rollers. Hard to adjust so the rollers still push the wood and not leave a mark on light cuts. Big planers are heavy, expensive and if something breaks you have a real problem on your hands.
No, I like my Ridgid, I like it a lot. When I saw the test on the new DeWalt in Wood I thought hey, one like mine but with more power. Then I see it is 15 amps, like the Ridgid. So I guess I need to see it in action or see what others say about it.
I haven't found a used 15" planer that wasn't worn out. Maybe some day I will buy a new Delta X5 15". The 5 year guarantee sure looks good.
"The 5 year guarantee sure looks good." No kidding! I think they're counting on that to get everyone's attention (and $$). So far, looks like it's working. Easier to pay a little extra for Delta when that long warrantee comes along with it.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
i just went to jets web site , and i see they have a new 12 1/2" portable planer its model JWP-12DX. i havent. seen it work yet but should be out soon i saw it at the AWFS show in Aniheim
The new 13" is much different from the upgraded 12-1/2" from what I've read and seen. Wish they had it on their web site.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)

If any of you Upstate New Yorkers are interested in seeing the new planer, the Dewalt Rep will be at the Woodworkers Warehouse Store in Cortland between 4 and 6 PM on September 11. They are supposed to have many items to demo. Might even get a hat or something.
My Lear's in for repairs this week, but here's wishing you a great time!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
