John,
I like the look of the New Fangled Workbench, but I have a question about it. My “shop” will be my half of the two car garage in the new house, and since we live in snow country, I don’t want to banish my car to the elements forever.
I would like to build the New Fangled workbench, but I will need to get it out of the way…over to one garage wall…when it’s not in use. Any idea how much your finished bench weighs? Think it might be adaptable to retracting casters of some kind, so that I could wheel it out to the middle of the garage floor when needed…retract the wheels…and have a sturdy place to work? Then, be able to wheel it back to the wall when not in use?
Thanks,
Lon

The eight foot version of the bench probably weighs around 200 pounds.
One person that built the bench placed non swiveling casters under the legs on one end and lifted the end without casters to move the bench wheelbarrow style.
I prefer a bench that is permanently up against the wall, preferably with some windows just above the bench top. This is the layout that many traditional style shops in New England use and I find that it works well. With this set up, I often use an assembly table, out in the shop, that can be set up in various heights and top dimensions depending on the piece being built.
